Golden Gate Bridge
Depending on which side of San Francisco Bay you are starting on will determine where you can travel first, but none of these locations are more than thirty minutes away from each other. On the Northern side you can visit the Golden Gate View Point and get premium pictures of the famous bridge, and watch as barges pass under the metal beams.
Informational plates are placed around the walkways, in order to show how the idea of the Golden Gate Bridge became a reality. Or take a walk over to the visitor’s center and learn more about the history of the Golden Gate Bridge, along with the 10 million other visitors this bridge receives each year.
Fun Fact: Construction of the bridge took a total of 1,064 days, or 4 years and 4 1/2 months to complete.
Golden Gate Park
On the Southern end of the bridge you can visit the Golden Gate Park, consisting of 1,017 acres of lakes, meadows, and trails that snake through the whole piece of land. Though you can spend your time at the park walking around the greenery, there are plenty of other attractions to explore.
Some of these attractions include the AIDS Memorial Grave, Bison Paddock, California Academy of Sciences, Conservatory of Flowers, de Young Museum, or the Japanese Tea Garden. Each holds their own unique story, and many of these buildings have been in San Francisco’s culture for generations, making them cultural icons as well.
Fun Fact: The park average about 25 million visitors a year, with half of these visits by locals.
Alcatraz
Once one of the most notorious federal penitentiaries, Alcatraz has also been a civil war fort, a military prison, and the site for Native American protests. Now a rich U.S. National Park, you can walk the same echoing halls that inmates did decades prior.
You can choose to either go during the daytime, or challenge your nerves and go for a nighttime exploration, listening to an audio tour provided at the beginning of the prison. You will hear about escape attempts, the hardships of living on a desolate island, and how the elements steadily chipped away at the prison’s rock exterior leading to it being shut down for good.
Whatever time you decide to go you will have to take a ferry across the bay, so make sure you plan your times accordingly.
Fun Fact: Alcatraz was home to notorious criminals such as Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly.
